Psychological Aspects of Widowhood in Old Age
摘要
The state of widowhood is a universal phenomenon. Also in a rapidly aging world, including India, widowhood has become an even more critical concern with more people, especially women making up the large majority, outliving their spouses by many years. So due to the higher life expectancy of women, widowhood is largely a women-specific condition. In India, this gets further pronounced due to a dismal number of remarriages among widow women in comparison to widower man. It is quite evident that the plight of widowed persons is not only a moral issue but also one that has systemic implications for societies that threaten economic and social stability. Widowhood further leads to many physical and mental health-related problems, which are seen in both short term and long term. Widowhood remains an important risk factor for transition into poverty, especially in India as our predominant Hindu society still does not easily give property rights to women in a conventional household. Bereavement in late life among women is a high-probability life event. The effects of bereavement on older women may be more profound than their younger counterparts. Widows show lower levels of morale than either the still-married or never-married women. Many psychosocial issues are seen more frequently among widows, especially the old ones. They have a significant risk of abandonment, poor medical care, and significantly higher mental and behavioral issues than their married counterpart.
