Geriatric Psychiatry as a Specialty: Psychosocial Challenges
摘要
In India, a gradual shift in the population age groups is happening, with an increase in the number of people in the geriatric age group, a phenomenon also known as the “graying of the population.” This shift needs a push for the development of adequate health facilities. Along with physical disorders forming a major chunk of healthcare needs in the geriatric age group, recent data emphasize the rise of geriatric mental health problems like depression, dementia, and parkinsonism. Thus, mental health of the geriatric population is an important avenue to be stressed upon. Many of the problems are not brought to the attention of the doctors or they are brought to medical attention only after a long delay or in a very serious stage once the treatment becomes difficult and challenging. Lack of quality social welfare provisions, financial difficulties, changing family structures leading to elderly people living alone, and inadequate provisions of medical services specialized in geriatric problems are some of the important issues in this regard. It is evident in India that much training and specialization for geriatric psychiatry are lacking. Geriatric psychiatry is a very young subspecialty in the world as well as in India. This chapter emphasizes the challenges faced by geriatric psychiatry as a specialty, as well as some remedial suggestions.
