Psychotherapy with Geriatric Clients
摘要
Psychotherapy is an important skill of psychiatrists that they use to treat the emotional problems of their geriatric clients. The basic principle of the therapy is same as those used for younger people, but there are some themes and issues that are unique for the elderly people. The issues can be of transference and countertransference which may be due to the age difference between the client and the therapists. The adaptation of a modified, customized, and flexible approach considering the special requirements of the patient and focusing on the specific developmental tasks and the challenges due to the age of the person will benefit the client. The negative and positive feelings of the geriatric client need to be addressed by the therapist and more attention to be given at the same time. It is demonstrated that psychotherapy is effective in both elderly people and young population. Depending on the stage and seriousness of the problem, psychotherapy can be given to the patient or the geriatric client as a primary or an adjunctive method of treatment to treat his or her issues.
