Psychosocial Aspects of Geriatric Mental Healthcare in Pakistan
摘要
Pakistan is a highly populated South Asian developing country, where healthcare infrastructure is poor. Mental healthcare is an underfunded and under-resourced service in Pakistan, with very few professionally qualified mental healthcare professionals, limited oversight of ethical practice, limited accessibility of services, and much stigma. Due to this, there is limited knowledge and limited willingness among members of the public when it comes to seeking mental healthcare. Within this context, an oft-neglected sub-specialty is geriatric mental healthcare. Older adults are culturally accorded respect in Pakistan, but research indicates a dearth of adequate care provision, identifying issues such as abuse, loneliness, and neglect. The study of geriatric mental health concerns in Pakistan is predominated by literature on depression and dementia, with other conditions largely ignored. Resultantly, the mental healthcare available to older adults in Pakistan is insufficient to properly address their needs, leading to inaccessibility, unavailability of required testing or services, few trained professionals, and prevalence of cultural myths about older adult mental health.
