This paper attempts to investigate the pivotal role of literature, encompassing both contemporary works and ancient Hindu scriptures, in shaping societal attitudes and behaviors toward sustainable living. Literature plays a crucial role in educating, inspiring, and mobilizing people toward a more sustainable future. By illustrating the relationships between people, ecosystems, and the environment, literature can foster a sense of responsibility. Through an interdisciplinary analysis drawing upon insights from environmental psychology, literary studies, and sustainability science, the paper tries to explore how literature serves as a powerful tool for fostering empathy, raising environmental consciousness, and inspiring collective action. By synthesizing evidence from renowned authors such as Rachel Carson, Aldo Leopold, and Wendell Berry, as well as contemporary voices like MV Nadkarni, Barbara KingsolverKingsolver, Barbara, and Amitav GhoshGhosh, Amitav, alongside insights from Hindu scriptures such as the Rigveda and the Bhagavad Gita, this paper underscores the urgent need for collaborative efforts between writers, scholars, and policymakers to harness the transformative potential of literature in promoting a harmonious relationship between humanity and the planet. In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna, in his lectures to Arjuna, stresses the need to live in balance with the environment and the sanctity of nature. However, paradoxically, both were involved in the first man-made forest fire, known as Khandava Dahan, to be recorded. The writers through their books, papers and stories, etc. can influence the people to adopt a sustainable lifestyle and practice the 8Rs to reduce the usage of resources instead of the old concept of 3Rs.
