The prelude to this book series, ‘Risk Management in Outer Space Activities: An Australian and New Zealand Perspective’ (Pozza & Dennerley, 2022), surveyed multiple areas of risk consideration for space activities, from space debris to cybersecurity. The book sheds light on a variety of risks, hazards, and risk management approaches relevant to space endeavours, with a central theme being the importance of understanding one’s context for risk and employing a structured assessment approach accordingly. This chapter continues that work by underscoring the need for space actors within the emerging space industry to fundamentally understand their risk context and understand their contribution to stabilising the broader space ecosystem through proper risk practices.
