Strengthening RC beams is a technique that is growing rapidly along with the urgency of upgrading aging infrastructures. The two renowned methods, Near Surface Mounted (NSM) and Externally Bonded Reinforcement (EBR) techniques have been discussed with more emphasis. This paper evaluates the performance of NSM and EBR techniques in RC beam strengthening. It also discusses their benefits, practical limitations and potential in retrofitting. The paper incorporates improvements concerning the flexural capacity, shear capacity, failure mechanisms, materials selected, and hybrid approaches. The results indicate that each approach has its advantages and disadvantages and future studies should focus on enhancing affordability, robustness, and environmental resilience.

摘要
