Road safety is one of the major concerns as the number of vehicles increase day by day. Road safety encompasses the strategies and actions implemented to protect road users from fatalities and serious injuries. A comprehensive plan is crucial for both reducing the number of accidents and lessening their severity. Road crashes may be caused by one or a combination of different factors. This paper aims to study the impact of horizontal alignment on road safety. Three horizontal curves on NH stretch were identified as the study area. The traffic characteristics and the accident statistics on the selected areas were studied in detail. The alignment was designed using Open Roads software. An overview of the existing alignment was studied and improvement on the same was suggested to negotiate vehicles safely through these stretches. The other possible factors leading to accidents in these stretches were also studied. An ideal alignment for safe and comfortable movement and the safe operating speed with which vehicles can negotiate the alignment was also reported.
