Studies show that the advantages of IF could contribute to improved cognitive functions including memory, learning, attention, and executive functions. These are associated with increased levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which promotes the survival of neurons and synaptic plasticity. IF might also relieve some symptoms of anxiety and depression related to neurochemical changes (increased gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and serotonin levels, and decreased inflammation and oxidative stress).
