The applications of numerical data have been essential features of diverse fields that came to be problematized in Iran since the late nineteenth century. In recent decades, the country has experienced severe environmental problems on various fronts and has been forced to take counter measures in a variety of ways. As a result, the field has become an intensified research investigation site. This chapter examines how the field of the environment is characterized by and problematized through numbers and how such understandings about the environment are distinctively unfolding in several directions; in particular, I argue, they are incorporated into the formation of “environmentally conscious” subjects and are tied to the substantial yet unexpected expansion of infrastructure.
