Vision Zero in Action: A Seven-Year Study on Reducing Traffic Deaths in Rohtak City

This research scrutinizes traffic fatalities in Rohtak City, Haryana, from 2016 to 2023, revealing that transportation incidents account for 45% of non-natural deaths in India, with a significant portion occurring on highways. Despite the Indian government’s zero fatality vision, a stark gap in policy efficacy is evident. The study focuses on Rohtak City to propose targeted planning interventions for reducing traffic-related deaths. A detailed literature review combined with secondary and primary data analyses, augmented by the Delphi method, pinpoints driver error as a national issue, causing 78% of collisions. However, in Rohtak, infrastructural defects emerge as the predominant factor, responsible for 80% of mishaps. This focused examination underscores the need for bespoke solutions tailored to urban challenges to move closer to the zero-fatality goal. The findings advocate for a multidisciplinary strategy integrating theoretical understanding, policy refinement, urban planning, and execution to curb road collisions effectively. It emphasizes tailored urban interventions spanning Engineering, Enforcement, Emergency responses, Education, and Engagement to mitigate collision rates. Concluding with actionable urban-centric recommendations, the study aims to significantly reduce traffic fatalities, addressing the human, social, infrastructural, and economic repercussions. This research sheds light on Rohtak City’s traffic safety landscape and serves as a framework for other Indian cities striving for safer roads, aligning with international traffic safety practices.
