This study examines genAI usage patterns among Cambodian higher education students and validates the Critical Engagement with AI (CEAI) scale, designed to measure critical thinking behaviors in AI contexts. Survey data from 249 participants revealed widespread genAI adoption, with most using genAI on a weekly to daily bases. While genAI facilitates self-directed learning, its use to replace traditional academic practices (e.g., summarizing readings) raises concerns about surface-level engagement. The CEAI scale demonstrated strong reliability, a unidimensional structure, and evidence of convergent validity and discriminant validity, but further refinement is needed to improve specificity and predictive utility. These findings underscore the need for AI literacy programs that balance the benefits of genAI tools with the development of deeper critical thinking skills. This study contributes to global discussions on genAI’s educational potential, offering a validated framework for assessing critical engagement in AI-enhanced learning environments.

摘要
