“Rhythm”: A Key Component of Design
摘要
In the field visual design, “Rhythm” is identified as one of the most significant components widely considered and acknowledged by designers across the world. However, an empirical investigation as to what constitutes rhythm, what are its various kinds and why it is so significant is relatively less explored. In this study, we attempted to explore the same by (1) analyzing different design principles proposed by well-known design thinkers from three key places, namely Red House (England), Bauhaus (Germany), and Kala Bhavana (India), (2) by reviewing relevant research articles to explore rhythm in design and (3) collection and analysis of primary data (design samples) from different designers in order to explore the impact of rhythm in design. These three methods gave us insights into rhythm from various perspectives. The results of the study clearly indicate that rhythm is one of the significant components among other design features like balance, form, placement of shapes, orientation, pattern and so on. We also identified the significant components of “rhythm” in visual design. The variety of rhythm may differ (depending upon the usage of lines and shapes), but its presence in almost all impactful designs is noticed. The findings of this study can be useful for designers, researchers as well as for visual arts students. Further experimentation can be done on rhythm by using eye-trackers to understand the impact of rhythm in design during viewers’ aesthetic perception.
