Evidence of Non-classicality in the Perception of Musical Rhythm: An Experimental Study
摘要
In this study, we seek to examine whether an induced dichotomy in auditory signal makes the cognitive properties adhere to classical theory of total probability. 100 participants were divided into two equal groups. Group 1 was exposed to a pair of music clips (having similar tempo but contrasting music structure, separated by 5 s of silence) and were asked whether the two clips had the same tempo. Group 2 was made to listen to a different such pair first, followed by previous pair and was asked the same question for each pair. Analysis revealed that for Group 2, the probabilities of responses using the law of total probability show significant difference from probability values for Group 1. This intriguing result of violation of classical probability law agrees with previous reports made and can be significant in further explorations on the nature of the non-classicality in cognitive properties.
