Scientific Writing Skills and Presentations
摘要
Scientific reporting and making presentations in academic forums form the backbone of your academic journey. The reports and presentations are about writing science; therefore, they must be written in a scientific language and pattern. Key scientific writing skills include clarity, conciseness, coherence, logical flow, objectivity, and consistency. A thesis and journal articles are critical scientific reports that graduate students must produce to earn their degree. While these two documents share many similarities, such as the need for rigorous research methodology, they also exhibit distinct differences in purpose, format, and audience. When writing your thesis, ensure you first read a sample thesis to benchmark with others in your area and follow guidelines provided by your institution. A master’s thesis differs in scope and aims from a doctoral thesis. While a master’s thesis is limited in scope and aims to build research skills, a doctoral thesis has a broader scope and aims to produce original and significant results. Drafting a journal article from a thesis requires first isolating the key message. The key message guides the paper’s content, starting by isolating the specific paper’s key data, tables, and figures. The examination of your thesis consists of two components: the written document and the oral examination. It is important to prepare adequately for your success. Examiners typically adhere to similar guidelines and generally want you to succeed, which is encouraging. However, it is crucial to maintain scientific rigor throughout your research. During your academic work, you will participate in scientific meetings where presenting your findings, both internally and externally, is essential. Preparing effective visual aids for oral presentations is vital. Additionally, conferences often feature poster sessions; a well-designed poster captures attention and conveys your research’s key message. A sample PowerPoint presentation is included in this chapter.
