Surveys, qualitative, and participatory research use closely related methods and tools to gather data. The main methods are questioning, interviewing, observing, and collecting documents, and audio-visual materials. Six steps are followed in designing a survey tool and collecting the data. These include deciding on the questions to include, writing the questions, formatting the questionnaire, presenting the instrument, analyzing pretesting data and final editing, and lastly, data collection. In writing, the questions use simplicity and avoid leading questions. A checklist of 16 items is given for reference as you construct a questionnaire. The instrument’s formatting helps enhance the appeal, which is important for attracting respondents. In conducting an interview survey, consider the following key activities: 1. Planning the interview, 2. Recruitment and training of enumerators, 3. Recruitment of respondents and gaining access; and 4. Finally, collecting the data. Three key activities are involved in the questionnaire survey: pre-survey communication, sending out the questionnaire, and following up. Questions should be organized logically and naturally. The main types of questions in a survey instrument include quantity, category-based, dichotomous, and rank order, Rating scales such as Likert scale, ranking and scoring, semantic differential, and matrix questions. By following these guidelines, researchers can ensure their data collection instruments are well-designed and effectively gather the necessary data. A sample questionnaire is also presented.

摘要
