Jamuna basin of East Karbi Anglong and Hojai district of Assam, India, extends from 25°41ʹ N to 26°27ʹ N latitude and 92°44ʹ E to 93°40ʹ E longitude. The Jamuna river is a tributary of Kopili river. The Jamuna river originates from Khumbaman hills near Diphu in East Karbi Anglong and joins with Kopili river at Jamunamukh in Hojai district. The total area of the watershed is about 3900 sq km, and the elevation of the Jamuna watershed varies from 50 to 1360 m above mean sea level. This type of hilly remote watershed is crucial to understand water availability, where Land Use Land Cover (LULC) dynamics, presence of vegetation cover and various topographical features influence water availability within the basin. This study aims to identify surface water storage sites and also assess the impact of human-induced factors like land use and its effects on surface water and presence of vegetative cover inside the watershed. Using Landsat-8 imagery in ArcGIS 10.8, we determined the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Topographical Wetness Index (TWI) and also the LULC of the area to get a comprehensive understanding of the water availability status of the watershed. The results of the study revealed significant NDVI changes over the past ten years, primarily driven by expansion of human settlements, built-ups and agricultural lands. These changes have adversely affected the hydrological regime of the area. The decline in dense vegetation cover has triggered reduction in natural infiltration and has impacted the hydrological balance of the watershed.
