Design research involves analyzing consumer demands, industry trends, and emerging technologies to create user-centered solutions. These solutions evolve through generating various concepts based on user interviews and market surveys, and then screening them for user requirements, feasibility, and viability to identify the best concept for prototyping and refinement. Novice designers often struggle with generating diverse ideas, leading to suboptimal solutions. This research aimed to provide a systematic approach for new designers to ideate and select the most feasible concepts, using a seat design for handloom weavers as a case study. Techniques like Morphological Matrix and Pugh’s Matrix were employed to generate and screen concepts due to their popularity in design. A field survey identified primary issues faced by weavers, including prolonged awkward seating, thigh compression, and uncomfortable movements. A movable, comfortable seat design that integrates with existing handloom setups was planned. A morphological chart generated various concepts addressing sub-functions like the sitting platform, stability, mobility, comfort, and back support. Ten feasible concepts were developed and screened using Pugh’s matrix based on criteria such as maneuverability, comfort, weight, ease of fabrication, cost, durability, maintainability, and stability. The most feasible concept was digitally rendered using CAD software and shown to the weavers for feedback. This research showcases a structured approach for budding designers to enhance their creative process and develop innovative, user-focused products.
