In recent years, cleaning has emerged as a new industry in many developing countries, including India. Occupational health issues and the safety of the cleaners are gaining significant attention as their number is increasing. Among various cleaning tools, the use of a cleaning stick is most common in cleaning operations. The purpose of the present work is to modify the design of the cleaning stick based on ergonomics analysis. First, the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders among female cleaning workers working in university hostels was investigated using Nordic Body Parts Discomfort (BPD) questionnaire. Twenty (20) female cleaners in floor-scrubbing activity using a long scrubber stick (locally made) were interviewed and they reported their discomfort/ pain in various body parts including hands/wrist (85.0%), shoulders (80.0%), and neck (75.0%) during the past 12 months. The working postures were photographed and analyzed for further confirmation of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among cleaners due to their adopted working posture. The captured postures were simulated using digital human model in Tecnomatix Jack Human Modeling software. Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RALU) analysis was conducted for posture assessment. The RULA results showed that the postures of female cleaners were at higher risk (score 6) and require immediate modification. Following a participatory design approach, a modified scrubber-stick design was proposed and evaluated from ergonomics perspective. A comparison of existing and modified designs was conducted. Results showed that the modified design improved postures during cleaning. The RULA score for the new design was 4, indicating acceptable postural risk for MSDs. Overall, the finding highlighted that the MSDs among cleaning workers can be minimized with effective ergonomic intervention.
