Design, with its central idea of changing an existing situation into a desired situation, is imperative to satisfy the needs of BOP. We define the BOP people as those living on less than 4 USD a day. This study addresses the need for designing sustainable and efficient energy solutions for low-income households of the Base of the Pyramid (BOP) communities. According to a latest report, 72% of households prefer to cook on wood-fired stoves (chulhas) in India. Lot of fuel energy gets wasted by the sides of the chulhas while cooking. Our research aims to design a product that utilizes waste energy from chulhas to provide hot water for household purposes. The study is based on primary data and is experimental in nature. A preliminary survey was conducted in a village, followed by a user study involving thirty households. Through a user-centred design approach and experimental testing, we developed a cost-effective, easy-to-use product that can be attached to existing chulhas. Our design consists of a pipe system crafted from aluminium or copper, which harnesses waste heat from the chulha to hot water, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. The system comprises a container for cold water storage, a tap for controlling water flow, and a utensil for collecting hot water. The resulting product offers simultaneous hot water generation while cooking, utilizing the same fuel energy and time and contributing to environmental sustainability. The findings suggest a viable solution for BOP communities, with potential implications for future design interventions addressing energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
