Primary bone tumours of the pelvic ring occur in about 10–15% of cases. Internal hemipelvectomy followed by reconstruction of the pelvic ring has been a standard procedure after excision of malignant bone tumours. However, it is a surgical challenge to achieve a negative tumour margin at this site. Various methods of reconstruction of the pelvis have been described. Non-vascularized fibular grafts have been used with success. Vascularized fibular grafts for reconstruction of gaps after excision of tumours have also been described with improved results. Other techniques may involve the use of prostheses, allografts, autoclaved grafts and tumours treated with liquid nitrogen.
