Arthrodesis continues to be a dependable procedure in stabilizing the diseased joints where movements are painful. The procedure is more useful in the lower extremity where stability is preferred to mobility. Arthrodeses are usually performed for salvage, except in the foot, where sub-talar, triple and pan-talar arthrodeses are used with great advantage in stabilizing the foot after realignment. A painful joint with fibrous ankylosis can also be managed by achieving arthodesis in a weight-bearing joint (Fig. 14.1a, b). Arthrodesis is a useful and dependable method in patients with repeatedly failed arthroplasty, such as TKR with severe osteoporosis.
