This article explores potential cybersecurity threats in industrial control systems, focusing on their reliance on longstanding core models. Despite advancements in production technology, protocols like Modbus TCP and Modbus RTU, first introduced in 1979, remain widely used due to their simplicity, accessibility, and ease of maintenance. However, these same qualities make them susceptible to cyber threats, as external actors can easily analyze, connect to, and disrupt these systems. By examining the Modbus RTU protocol and simulating a basic attack via the RS485 physical standard, this study highlights the persistent vulnerabilities of industrial systems to external interference.
