Man has always been attracted by the aesthetics of nature, which is only possible with wonderful, attractive, bright and enchanting colours. Since ancient times humans have tried to add colour in his life, be in the form of design of walls, paintings, fabrics, or even food items, body art, and cosmetics. Colour is one of the basic attributes of any material, which catches the eye. The ancient civilizations used plants, animals, minerals, etc. as the source of colours. Some animal origin biocolours which have been used across the globe since ancient times include Cochineal dye, Kermes dyes, lac dyes (all insect origin dyes) and Tyrian Purple (from mollusc). The advent of synthetic dyes, revolutionized the colour industries by providing an economical and easy to use source of colour as opposed to plant or animal based colours and hence, the animal origin dyes fell out of use. However, with the pace of time, we are becoming more aware about the detrimental effects of synthetic dyes on the environment as well as the human health. So, the interest is again shifting towards the biological sources of colours. This chapter focuses on the various common animal based biocolours including their structure, source, and applications along with highlighting some recent advancements in the field of animal-based biocolours.
