The Future Perspective of Biocolours in a Sustainable World

The growing concern over environmental degradation and the shift toward sustainable practices have brought biocolours to the forefront of eco-friendly solutions in various industries. This chapter explores the future perspectives of biocolours as a sustainable alternative to synthetic dyes, focusing on their potential for reducing environmental impact, improving social equity, and promoting economic viability. Natural colours or biocolours are becoming more and more necessary in our modern world because synthetic colours are carcinogenic, non-biodegradable, and harmful to both human health and the environment. Businesses in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics sectors must use natural-source colours to satisfy customer demand for natural products and preserve economic competitiveness. The manufacture of biopigment can be made more efficient and less expensive by using industrial leftovers, agro-waste, or by-products from many industries. Pigment production difficulties are being addressed by developments in bioinformatics methodologies, omics platforms, and molecular investigations. Biotechnology could be the essential key for industrial optimization, environmental impact reduction, and sustainable development. The pharmacological potential of biopigments, including their potential to fight cancer and other disorders, is another area of research interest. To create a greener future, more experimental use of biocolours as a substitute for synthetic colourants in various areas of our life should be welcomed. However, more investigation is required to determine the best ways to maximize pigment properties like composition and yield through the use of metabolic engineering tools, growth parameter optimization, the use of low-cost organic substrates to increase value, the existence of numerous elicitors for pigment synthesis, stabilizing methods for higher pigment utilization, and safer extraction methods for large-scale extraction.
