Beyond the Code: Identifying Surface Learning Approaches in Engineering Students’ Programming Solutions

This study investigates indicators of surface learning approach (SLA) in engineering learners tackling structured programming challenges. Analyzing qualitative data from interviews and screen recordings (N = 13), we identified 49 SLA instances of indicators categorized under conceptual understanding, procedural knowledge, and inconsistency in programming. Findings reveal learners struggle with recalling conceptual knowledge, algorithms, and syntax. They show inconsistency in coding practices, often failing to write or follow algorithms correctly. Additionally, learners exhibit limitations in programming-related procedural knowledge, unable to apply recalled concepts or translate algorithms into functional code. By identifying these specific SLA indicators, this study contributes to a nuanced understanding of engineering learners’ learning behaviors in programming contexts, informing educational strategies to better support skill development.
