Learner Engagement and Role of Technology in Online Asynchronous Courses

In the evolving landscape of higher education, online asynchronous courses have emerged as a transformative force, reshaping traditional learning paradigms. Through synchronous and asynchronous modes, online learning ensured uninterrupted learning, helping many higher education institutions restart activities especially after covid. This paper investigates the impact of technological advancements on learner engagement, completion rate, behavioral learning in the context of online asynchronous courses. By leveraging the data from AWS Quick Sight, of our existing courses, this study examines how various technological tools and platforms enhance learner interaction, motivation, and overall engagement. Drawing on data from multiple online courses offered by IIMBx, the digital wing of IIM Bangalore, on platforms like SWAYAM and IIMBx, and then visually representing them, we explore the role of interactive multimedia, gamification, discussion forums, and personalized learning analytics in fostering an engaging learning environment. We draw a comparison between the same course which is offered in SWAYAM which is an open platform with less technology with that of our AI for Managers Program. The findings reveal the importance of close cohorts, features of the Learning Management System (LMS) and the content of the course and that technology not only facilitates flexible learning but also promotes active participation and deeper understanding among learners. Key insights highlight the significance of real-time feedback, adaptive learning paths, and peer collaboration facilitated by technological interventions. Additionally, the study underscores the importance of instructional design and the integration of user-friendly interfaces to maximize the potential of these technologies. We also try to find the gaps which continue to be present in the world of online education and learning and try to find ways in which it can be dealt with for a better learner engagement and course completion rates. This paper contributes to the growing body of knowledge on online education by providing empirical evidence on the effectiveness of technology and integration of various tools in enhancing learner engagement. It offers practical recommendations for educators and instructional designers aiming to optimize online asynchronous learning experiences. Through this research, we aim to underscore the pivotal role of technology in creating dynamic and interactive learning ecosystems that cater to the diverse needs of contemporary learners.
