Interactive Storytelling with StoryBuilder: A Generative AI Approach to Reading

This paper introduces ‘StoryBuilder,’ an innovative language learning feature designed to enhance English language acquisition through interactive storytelling. StoryBuilder utilizes generative AI to create personalized stories and illustrations based on inputs provided by learners. By incorporating elements of narrative construction, visual engagement, and contextual learning, StoryBuilder aims to captivate students’ interest and encourage deeper engagement with the text. Additionally, StoryBuilder seeks to teach students the foundational elements of constructing a story, fostering an understanding of narrative structure and creative writing skills. In addition to the generated stories, the feature includes a series of comprehension questions to reinforce learning and assess understanding to ensure that the children have engaged with the story created and have understood the context. This study investigates the impact of StoryBuilder on learners’ engagement and time spent on the app, with a focus on measuring its effectiveness in promoting sustained interest in reading and improving English language skills. Initial findings suggest that StoryBuilder increases learner engagement and provides a compelling, interactive approach to language learning. The paper also explores the ways in which the feature is being enhanced based on user feedback.
