Engaging the MOOC Learners to Excel Through Interventions: A Brief Review
摘要
Learner engagement is crucial for ensuring effective learning and positive outcomes, encompassing attention, interest, and passion in various forms such as active participation in discussions, completion of assignments, and interaction with course materials. In MOOCs, where the learning environment is less structured, maintaining high levels of engagement is challenging due to the lack of direct instructor interaction, large enrollments, diverse learner populations, and the self-paced nature of the courses. Engaged learners are more likely to achieve higher grades, develop critical thinking skills, and apply their knowledge, which translates into asking productive questions, completing assignments on time, and seeking constructive feedback. They take advantage of learning materials, quizzes, and videos to deepen their understanding and often monitor their own progress, contributing to the learning experience of others through discussions, resource sharing, and peer support. Various interventions, such as interactive study materials and personalized messages, have been employed to address the challenge of increasing engagement in MOOCs. This research aims to understand these interventions and their effectiveness in enhancing engagement. Our findings will provide valuable insights for educators, instructional designers, and MOOC providers, helping them create more engaging and effective online learning experiences, thereby improving learning outcomes and increasing course completion rates.
