Medical research can have several different and conflicting purposes, which this chapter explores in the context of the former Singapore Tissue Network. The network was established in the context of investments into medical research as a promising sector of economic growth, with the aim of centralizing tissue storage and making it productive for research. The network was thereby part of a sociotechnical imaginary of economic prosperity for Singapore; yet this imaginary conflicted with researchers’ technoscientific imaginaries of how this could be achieved. Tracing the making and imagining of value in tissue storage practices, the chapter traces how certain design decisions for the network did not align with how researchers considered value to be produced. Central to this difference was the question of collaboration and data sharing as well as the positioning of the Singapore Tissue Network in an Asian context. The closure of the Singapore Tissue Network can therefore not be reduced to a lack of use of its resources, since use itself depends on the (conflicting) purposes attributed to the repository and how these may practically be achieved.
