Remote Sensing Technologies in Aerospace: Applications and Opportunities

Sensors on board satellites collect detailed and consistent information from the Earth's surface, providing scientists with data that have revolutionised the monitoring and research of estuarine and marine systems. Satellite remote sensing data provide almost continuous information about the Earth’s surface, making it possible to monitor the evolution of surface changes and identify and better understand the processes that control them. This chapter reviews the advances in remote sensors used to observe oceans and coastal regions. It presents examples of applications that use data from these sensors to monitor these valuable ecosystems, which are currently under increasing anthropogenic and natural threats. Concrete examples will be presented to demonstrate how data from remotely sensed instruments, such as the Multi-Spectral Instrument (MSI), Thematic Mapper (TM), Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+), Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI), Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and other multi-sensor products, have been pivotal in addressing significant oceanographic and environmental challenges, including:
