This chapter introduces and discusses multimodal reading tasks that have been used to investigate incidental vocabulary acquisition. These tasks can be categorized into either individual or social tasks. The individual tasks include those that combine reading with listening, digital gaming, and the consumption of media. The social tasks include those that combine reading with social media, online gaming, language output, and collaboration. To provide readers an overview of the current state of knowledge regarding each type of input, previous relevant incidental vocabulary acquisition research is reviewed. The chapter ends with a commentary on what the current body of research can tell us about incidental vocabulary acquisition through the completion of multimodal reading tasks as well as the aspects future studies should explore.
