This chapter introduces the most common target text types in research on the incidental acquisition of vocabulary through reading. These text types can be grouped into two categories: shorter and longer texts. This chapter discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each text type for incidental vocabulary acquisition studies, then describes each text type and reviews relevant incidental vocabulary acquisition studies to demonstrate why specific genres are suitable to investigate certain variables. The chapter ends with a reflective summary of issues that researchers should consider when selecting target texts.
