Urban Heat Island Mitigation Through Green Infrastructure for Sustainable Development

Urban heat island (UHI) presents a significant concern to the well-being of urban residents and the sustainability of urban environments due to urbanisation and industrialisation worldwide, and it has drawn considerable attention recently. UHI is caused by several factors, including the consequences of global climate change and the widespread conversion of natural green spaces into paved surfaces as a result of rapid urban growth. The UHI effect lowers air quality, increases water demand, increases energy consumption owing to cooling requirements, and increases morbidity and death from heat stress. Green infrastructure or adding natural and semi-natural features to urban areas is one viable option. This work addresses the approach for UHI source and mitigation with an evaluation of how green infrastructure helps to lessen the negative effects. This addresses the benefits of green infrastructure comprising social, economic, and environmental aspects like increased community well-being, better air and water quality, and increased urban biodiversity. Understanding the relationship between green infrastructure and UHI reduction helps to formulate well-informed plans. This approach can be replicated in other cities to create more resilient, sustainable, and pleasant urban environments.
