Investigating the spatial relationships of multifunctionality in rural regions is essential for strengthening the synergies between urban and rural functions, thereby fostering more integrated urban-rural development. Using Mianyang City as a case study, this paper investigates the structural evolution of the multifunctional spatial correlation network in rural areas. It applies a multifunctional evaluation index system and employs both the modified gravitational model and social network analysis methods. The findings reveal that the multifunctional spatial association network in Mianyang is tightly connected in the central and southern regions but shows uneven distribution overall. Regarding network characteristics, the study period witnessed significant increases in network density, average node degree, and connectivity. However, the relatively low modularity suggests that cross-functional interactions between regions have strengthened, leading to improved network connectivity and overall function. Yet, the strength of associations remains an area for further enhancement. At the individual network level, Jiangyou City and Santai County continue to hold a dominant position due to their geographic and resource advantages. In contrast, Zitong and Beichuan have enhanced their network centrality through multifunctional development, reflecting deeper resource flows, functional interactions, and cross-functional cooperation, which have facilitated the coordinated development of multifunctional spaces in rural areas.
