Renovation of Urban Historic Blocks Based on Weaving Theory: A Study of Xiabixiang Street, Changsha, China
摘要
Historical districts represent the spatial manifestation of urban fabric; however, the rapid wave of urbanization has led to the fragmentation of this historical fabric, resulting in insufficient spatial vitality and the deterioration of physical spaces. The challenge of revitalizing these districts while preserving their historical character and highlighting their cultural significance is a pressing issue in urban renewal. The concept of urban stitching has been widely applied in urban renewal practices due to its effectiveness in addressing the fragmentation of urban fabric and promoting the integration of old and new districts. Therefore, this article aims to explore strategies for the protection and renewal of historical districts under the guidance of the urban stitching concept, using the historical district of Xiabixiang Street in Changsha as a case study. Based on urban social research and data analysis, the article seeks to thoroughly identify the issues facing Xiabixiang Street and proposes a stitching approach at both macro and micro scales, focusing on aspects such as the district’s cultural context, transportation, ecology, and community life. The goal is to transform Xiabixiang Street into a vibrant urban environment that embodies historical and cultural characteristics while being full of charm.
