The study of height in Colombia began in 1910, under the influence of the research on this topic promoted by Robert W. Fogel. Antonio Ordoñez et al. (1992) used a sample of 1452 men and 1362 women between 18 and 28 years old as well as information from national identity cards (5839 women and 8264 men). Since 2007 Adolfo Meisel-Roca and his associates have published different studies based on more than 9 million observations for persons born from 1905 to 1993; 225,805 heights from the judicial records; 15,911 heights from passports for those born between 1870 and 1919; and 10,885 heights from the records of the central bank’s employees since 1923. These studies have shown a generalized increase in the height of both men and women during the twentieth century: on average 1 cm per decade. These improvements occurred for all the regions. Additionally, there has been a convergence of height both among persons and regions. More recently, research on height in Colombia has concentrated on pre-1500 populations studied by archaeologists using skeletal evidence.
