Germany occupies a historically and geostrategically complex position within Europe. Facing growing expectations from partners for increased leadership, its security and normative influence on the global stage is evolving. With close security ties to the United States, deep economic interdependence with China, and as a significant supporter of Ukraine in its war against the Russian aggression, Germany is compelled to navigate the intensifying systemic rivalries shaping both Europe and the international order. This chapter examines Germany’s capacity for shaping global affairs within multilateral frameworks such as the European Union, NATO, and the United Nations. It argues that Germany’s role in the world can be understood primarily as a regional power, which, due to its substantial economic and military resources, holds the potential to alter international power balances.
