The strategic location of the Azores has consistently drawn considerable interest since their discovery. Within the framework of Portuguese sovereignty, the archipelago has long featured in the grand strategies of major maritime powers—initially the United Kingdom and, subsequently, the United States of America. Portugal’s accession to the European Union has partially reshaped this dynamic, as the European Community has increasingly acknowledged the geostrategic importance of the Azores. Moreover, the growing presence of Chinese interest in the North Atlantic has brought renewed attention to the islands, particularly given the perceived decline in American engagement. Employing a qualitative and hermeneutic approach, this chapter examines the evolving geostrategic relevance of the Azores, evaluating their role both as an object and as an agent within great-power competition, and considering their future prospects as geostrategic assets.
