This chapter presents a profile of Indonesia’s geopolitical architecture by exploring its geostrategic, geopolitical, and geoeconomic intentions and capabilities in international politics. As a leading proponent of “the third world” in the early days of independence, and later regional leader of ASEAN during and after the Cold War, Indonesia’s geopolitical architecture evolved following the domestic, regional, and international changes. In this chapter, we explore the history of (1) Indonesia’s military and strategic doctrine, (2) diplomatic influence and visions of international order, and (3) strategies of economic growth and development that enabled its strategic capabilities and influence. We analyze Indonesia’s visions of geopolitical order and how it translates this vision into material capabilities, considering its geopolitical, geostrategic, and geoeconomic visions of regional and global international order. This assessment allows us to understand how Indonesia’s geopolitical profile has evolved since its independence, and how Indonesia would address future geopolitical challenges.
