Traditionally, geopolitical scholars focus on how great powers compete for influence over small states and how small states navigate such competition. This book endeavors to transcend the “great power-small state” framework and to reorient both states and quasi-states as critical geopolitical actors. It advances a post-sovereign typology that seeks to capture different ideal types of states and quasi-state actors in the twenty-first-century great power competition, including global powers, regional powers, small states, associated states, contested states, and territorial autonomies. Reading the global geopolitical map through a post-sovereign lens, this book advances a novel research agenda of studying the interaction of states and quasi-states in international relations scholarship.
