The academies of classical learning, known as “Shuyuan” in Chinese, represent a distinctive product of ancient Chinese educational development. Emerging as a unique educational form and system, these academies originated under the historical circumstances of the decline of official educational institutions and the limitations of private schooling. In essence, they can be regarded as the outcome of educational reforms in ancient China.
