Vellar is a seasonal river basin and is located in the South Indian State Tamil Nadu extents to a latitude and longitude of (11° 13′ N, 79° 47′ E). The basin covers an area of 7520.87 sq.km. The length of the Velar River is 150 km. It originates from the southern slope of Kalvarayan hills in Salem District and finally drains into Bay of Bengal adjacent in Parangipettai (Port-O-Nova) of Chidambaram taluk, Cuddalore district. The river has a meandering tendency in the lower reach for a length of 30km which results in heavy erosions of agriculture lands due to extreme discharge during northeast monsoon season. Initially field surveys were conducted to know about the exact conditions in the study area. Using the geospatial data, HECRAS-1D and Mike 21 numerical modeling studies were performed. From the modeling result’s vulnerable locations were identified and initial river training works were designed. The details of studies with pre and post project observations are discussed in the study.
