Customized prostheses are not a novel concept. As early as the era of machining, physicians began to think beyond the constraints of the currently available processing techniques, proposing the idea of customized prostheses and suggesting their necessity. The prostheses these doctors envisioned typically have irregular shapes and accessory structures, making it very challenging to produce them using conventional subtractive manufacturing processes. Moreover, since machined customized prostheses are mostly solid structures, achieving good osseointegration at the bone-prosthesis interface is difficult. For enterprises, the design and manufacturing costs of small-batch or single-piece customized products are high, the production speed is slow, and both clinical doctors and patients face long wait times. The difficulties in processing, high costs, long wait times, and poor osseointegration at the bone-prothesis interface greatly limit the widespread application of customized prostheses.
