In the past, topics that may be considered unscientific today were commonly discussed as a part of scientific discourse. These included religious beliefs and magic, among other topics. Even during the Scientific Revolution, many advocates of new science, such as Isaac Newton (1642–1727), were deeply interested in alchemy and astrology.
