As of December 2019, coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has become a serious worldwide health dilemma. The main organ affected by COVID-19 is the lungs, but other organs, e.g., cardiac, brain, gastrointestinal system, etc., can also be affected. COVID-19 symptoms may vary from upper respiratory infection to severe pulmonary infection and even death in some cases. The gold standard test for diagnosing COVID-19 is reverse transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction; however, imaging techniques also have a crucial role in its diagnosis. Chest computed tomography (chest CT) and chest X-ray (CXR) are the primary imaging techniques used to screen, diagnose, and manage patients. More recently, the chest CT has only been limited to specific indications, e.g., severe infection and COVID-19 complications. Various reporting protocols and classification recommendations have been defined for the standard-of-care diagnosis and screening of COVID-19 based on CXR and chest CT scans. Moreover, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, and nuclear medicine can also be used for the diagnosis and evaluation of COVID-19 complications and extrapulmonary manifestations. Moreover, with the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, several algorithms have been developed for computer-aided diagnosis of COVID-19. In this chapter, we aim to overview the current knowledge of imaging patterns and standard recommendations for imaging-based diagnosis of COVID-19. We provide case illustrations of different COVID-19 patterns in each modality to enhance the understanding of the imaging patterns. We also briefly discuss the expanding role of AI in imaging-based diagnosis and prediction of prognosis in COVID-19.
