The COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has created unprecedented challenges for worldwide public health, necessitating the quick development of effective treatment methods. Systemic inflammation and sometimes hyper-inflammatory responses with cytokine storm are associated with the severity of the disease and poor prognosis and even death. Several inflammatory hallmarks including C-reactive protein. Ferritin, D-dimers and different cytokines such as IL-6, IL-10 and TNF-α have been reported. The complications are managed by the use of anti-inflammatory drugs to alleviate the dysregulated immune response and cytokine-mediated inflammation that increased the survival rate and lesser hospitalization. Moreover, several customized medicine techniques must be taken that depend on patient variables, disease severity and inflammatory biomarkers in order to adjust treatment regimens accordingly. Despite these achievements, there are still many hurdles and open issues to fight against this disease. Thus, the optimized use of anti-inflammatory drugs avoids possible risks and bad effects. The effectiveness and safety of anti-inflammatory medicines in COVID-19, including corticosteroids, IL-6 inhibitors, JAK inhibitors and colchicine, among others, have been looked upon. Various research approaches investigate the possible synergistic effects of anti-inflammatory drugs by identifying novel targets and pathways implicated in inflammation after COVID-19 infection.
