Many food additives without any nutritional value are used lawfully in processed foods. They enhance color and improve the taste of food. The food product manufacturer would use them in an acceptable and lawful amount. Food additives such as emulsifiers and flavoring agents are found to have negative effects on mental health causing anxiety-like behavior and lower social behaviors in animal models. Further, hyperactivity behaviors were discovered in rats once monosodium glutamate was administered. Food coloring agents, which make food appealing to people especially children, play a role in increased hyperactivity. This may appear due to the brain’s chemical signaling being affected by food flavoring agents. Furthermore, ultra-processed foods also have some correlation with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and hyperactivity. It is important that, as consumers, we try to avoid foods that contain high doses of food additives and preservatives and possess the knowledge of the ingredients used in the foods we ingest. As there is a link between our brain–gut axis and nutrition, natural alternatives are definitely recommended as a safety approach. The food authorities should also emphasize the importance of clear food labeling so that the consumer can avoid foods that pose risks to their health.
