The Voice of Young Gilaks: A Qualitative Exploration of Iranian Gilaki Native Speakers’ Attitudes Toward Their Language
摘要
This study investigates the attitudes of Iranian Gilaki native speakers toward their mother tongue through semi-structured interviews with 28 Gilaki students aged 18 to 26. Utilizing a qualitative approach, the research reveals a positive sentiment among participants regarding their language, highlighting its significance as a vital aspect of their identity and cultural heritage. However, the participants express concerns about the lack of institutional support for the Gilaki language, particularly within the educational system. Despite this disregard, they demonstrate a desire to preserve and promote their linguistic heritage. The findings illustrate the participants’ pride in their Gilaki roots and highlight the importance of community efforts to maintain their language amidst the dominance of Persian. This exploration contributes to the understanding of language attitudes in minority communities, emphasizing the role of linguistic heritage in shaping individual and collective identities within the broader sociolinguistic landscape of Iran.
