Digitization in Smart Farming: Revolutionizing Agriculture

In recent years, digitalization has been reshaping modern agriculture by facilitating the convergence of the Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, automation, and blockchain technologies to increase productivity, efficiency, and sustainability. When combined with IoT sensors, precision farming offers real-time crop wellness, climate trends, and soil health, empowering farmers to make better-informed decisions. The rising prevalence of automation makes this relatively easy, given the growing presence of robotics, drones, and smart irrigation technologies, all of which can save farmers both manual labor and operational time. At the supply chain level, blockchain technology serves to improve transparency through verifiable record-keeping, which stands to increase traceability and contain various resource and food safety challenges. While there are many practical advantages to be gained from adopting digital technologies in agricultural practice, the technology adoption curve is still hindered by high upfront costs, smallholder farmer access to reliable Internet, and a population challenge to develop technical capacity. Nevertheless, plant-to-disrupt capabilities are accelerating investments in reliable on-farm digital technologies, rural populations that are becoming increasingly literate in terms of digital practice, and the use of these very technologies to assist farmers in technology transition. In order to maximize productivity, food security, and agricultural resilience against climate change and market fluctuations, digitalization is important as farming becomes more sustainable and efficient.
